So if I can find jacket/s that makes me able to do my errands, get to work and walk my dog without having to take a shower after I've been outside, I am willing to spend some money. I haven't experience with wool yet, but it's heavy, and I just assume it will get too warm.

This is quite an issue for me with all my previous thick winter jackets made out of polyester. So I get really warm, really fast after I start walking after 5 minutes. There are other options for warmer Arc'teryx jackets besides Thorsen, but I'd definitely consider getting something beefier than just Atom LT in addition to it. The Thorsen is not too bulky and is surprisingly breathable, besides you can always unzip it if the bus/train/subway is too warm. Atom LT would definitely not be a good choice for such weather, at least not for me. It performs admirably, especially when it's very windy, or when there's freezing rain or wet snow conditions. I mean, yeah - if you run very hot, walk briskly all the time and don't need to spend a lot of time just standing around waiting for transit, Atom LT may work for you as your only jacket but I'd say get an Atom LT and another jacket which would be much better for below freezing, strong winds and possible wet conditions.ĭon't get me wrong - I love my three Atom LTs to death, but when the mercury drops below +5, I reach for my Thorsen parka since it's goretex on the outside (water and windproof), very clean and functional longer cut, and light but warm down insulation. Train gets delayed and your "chilling" (pardon the pun) on the platform for 30 minutes in driving wind or freezing rain/snow. Atom LT is pretty trim so layering can only be done to a point, it will take a sweater and a thin fleece but I can't imagine how I'd have to bundle up if I had to survive my typical commute at say -10 with -20 windchill. You may get away with an Atom LT, but I'd personally freeze my ass off at below freezing temperatures and with any significant windchill factor, even with layers underneath.
